For Holloman AFB FamCamp: Just want to say that the ODR rep Lorie Hernandez was a great help. She had a soldier that was deployed and was coming in on Sunday. We arrived on Friday and instead of having us dry camp she allowed us to stay in that slot until Sunday I just wanted to say that was great. Thank you to Lorie for being a great host. The camp is small but it does have all the amenities one would expect from a famcamp

For Holloman AFB FamCamp: Stayed one night. Very clean spot. We stayed on a Monday night, there were about 8 total vehicles. Everyone very nice and quiet.

For Holloman AFB FamCamp: Like others, we read reviews before stopping somewhere. As we are traveling via motorcycles this time so some of the comments concerning the gates did not effect us, but are true. If you have a larger RV or trailer, use the commercial gate. As for the FAMCAMP proper, it is one of the cleanest and well kept we’ve seen. I understand MWR budget issues and they have taken their toll on FAMCAMPS Throughout DoD. This one has done very well in spite of dwindling budgets. On the personnel side, Lorie, the manager/host was outstandingly accommodating to us and very friendly. We spent quite a bit of time talking with her. Other reviewers have mentioned the long term nature of some of the residents here. For the most part, the areas are well kept, you can tell they have been here awhile but with the housing shortage in the area coupled with the nature of the training centers located on HAFB it’s completely understandable. It’s my personal opinion that in this area the FAMCAMP is providing a great service helping the base populace overcome housing issues. The longer term people showed us a sense of community that you rarely see in housing anymore. We were greeted by and got to know quite a few in our short three day stay, this is yet another asset to this FAMCAMP. The above comments are what garnered the 5 stars. The grounds are spars, but this is the desert so it is what it is. The buildings are older but well kept with newer bathroom fixtures and very clean. Some of the laundry machines were broken, but we understand new units are awaiting installation. An outdoor common area would be a great addition, as we’ve seen at other FAMCAMP facilities. When in the area again, we will definitely be stopping in.

Lisa and Wayne
For Holloman AFB FamCamp: We came to Alamogordo to go to Three Rivers Petroglyphs site and Cloudcroft, both of which we recommend. We found the family camp to be shipshape with large concrete pads for the pull throughs and a registration office personed by a very friendly Lorie. Though the camp is next to Highway 54, night traffic is light and we were not disturbed. Big rigs should plan to arrive at the west commercial gate between 6-6 weekdays as the previous reviewers’ comments about the main gate narrow lanes are true. Turn right on Mesquite and follow it to the camp. You can exit the main gate with a big rig, no problem. The annoying COVID requirement of obtaining a health letter if you have not been in New Mexico at least 14 days continues. This process took us two hours. If the commander continues to insist on this, the process should be streamlined. We were only asked our names, length of stay and last stop for the letter so I would think the Welcome Center should be able to handle this.

For Holloman AFB FamCamp: Didn’t even make it on base! We were told to enter we would need a letter from the Health Department verifying we were not a COVID risk. I’ll be so glad when this mess is over. Call before you go to see if this policy was only temporary.

Two for the Road
For Holloman AFB FamCamp: Arrived on a Saturday afternoon, after being told that they were first come first served, and that they usually had a couple sites open every night, we arrived to find that over 75% of the park is "Full Time". I was under the impression that the longest stay was 30 days, but obviously everyone on Holloman has received a waiver for that.
Other then that, be careful on the way in the main gate (only one open on the weekend) as they have concrete 1' high curbs to control the lanes. I made it thru towing a 41' fifth wheel, but you need to be careful and watch yourself. Also, take the literally FIRST LEFT, even though it looks like it goes to a housing area (it does) and follow the small "Fam Camp" signs. Good luck.

Retired Military
For Holloman AFB FamCamp: I normally do not give surveys or reviews of locations that I go to but in this case I will…
We originally planned stayed here for 7 days in the middle of January 2020 but after pulling in we stayed 2 nights.
First getting onto this insulation was a pain in the ass… They only had the main gate open on a weekday. There are 3 lanes, NO RVs can go through 2 left lanes due to extremely narrow cement barriers. To get on you must go through the far right lane and wait and wait and wait for security.. after 15 minutes of waiting I had to honk several times finally came out.
As a kid I was raised military. I personally did 32 years... So basically every military installation no matter what branch that I’ve been to for the most part has been cleaned, organized looking good, and dressed right dressed.
Every single military camp ground that I have stayed to this point have been pretty nice, managed very well, was very clean and organized.
I will give pros and cons of this facility.
This camp ground is $20 per night on the honor system paying cash or check, first come first serve. No credit card. In my opinion it’s over priced and paying by cash someone or camp ground host could pocket cash.
PRO’s:
This campground appears to be fairly new, all sites have water, electrical & sewer with a table, most have shade some don’t. 75% of the sites have nice long cement pads only wide enough for an RV but not wide enough to use as a porch. Each site has great views of the mountains.
10 min drive to White Sands national Monument. There are laundry facilities at this campground only a $1 to wash/ dry, 3 sets.
I will say this; the campground host does keep the bathrooms showers and laundry facilities very clean.
The showers are big and clean with plenty of warmish water, not extremely hot unfortunately.
CONS:
Many RV sites really look like crap. I am very surprised and disappointed that the campground host, MWR, or base command does not enforce tidiness.
Space #1 as you first come in has a bunch of crap underneath RV to include “extra†packages of toilet paper.. There are many other spaces with a ton of miscellaneous crap like utilitytrailers, buckets, storage containers laundry soap bottles laying on the ground under the door, big storage cargo bags laying under RV’s. Miscellaneous motorcycles, broken down go karts , quads with covers on them. One can see who has been staying forever, when they have fixed wooden steps going into their RV.
One would think that the campground host would lead by example; which in this case they are. 75% of the sites that are the furthest away from the freeway, that are all backed up against the wall; all have the backwoods dirty white trash ghetto mentality with crap strung all over everywhere. The campground host in #8 have 3 huge dogs with a 4’ portable fence going around there area and just a ton of eye sore crap all over. Other spaces are the same to keep dogs in and a major amount of eyesore crap every where.
Others have portable storage sheds behind their units, outdoor refrigerators, outdoor freezers, generators outside underneath, big wooden dresser that would go into a home being used outside the RV.
Many people, Instead of getting Heated hose, many have insulation with duct tape around the hose… When I checked in with host, her husband was in the process of skinning an animal from a hunt. This kind of crap is something I would have expected from a rough neck working camp or other side of the tracks NOT a military community.
Yes I realize this is a military installation and is a training facility for fighter jets, it is very very noisy most of the time. It’s just not noisy due to the jets, this campground is 30 yards away from a major highway and you can constantly hear traffic up and down at all hours of the day and night..
In my opinion this camp ground had piss poor planning when built and not keeping in mind of handicap personnel. At each space the septic connections are 10â€-12†way above grade making it extremely difficult for dumping / flushing your tanks and the flow of septic, the electric hook up box is also very low 18†off the ground and one must get on knees to connect, the water connection are under grade / ground in a box making it very difficult to connect must get on hands and knees to connect.
Out of the MANY military installations we have been to or stayed, it does not matter what branch, this military installation is the worst that we’ve ever been to for camp grounds, we had planned to be here 7 nights and only stayed 2. NEVER again will we come back.
I TRULY doubt that higher up command will read this or even correct situation.
Over & out..
