For Hunting Island State Park: We stayed here before the hurricane years ago in our old motor home and really enjoyed ourselves immensely and couldn’t wait to return in our new travel trailer this August. When we got there late in the evening after a 9 hour drive, I opened my car door and the car immediately filled with swarms of mosquitos. Setting up our trailer was terrible, being eaten alive... my face was covered constantly with mosquitos (and they typically leave me alone). After getting leveled and hooked up we couldn’t leave the camper without being immediately inundated with mosquitos inside the trailer. We know enough to keep the lights off before, and while, opening the door but they still swarmed inside the unit. The next morning, I went outside and was immediately swarmed again. In the daylight I discovered that we were in the vicinity of a large stagnant body of water. I walked over to the camp store and asked to be moved to a dryer area to hopefully reduce the mosquito problem. They kindly agreed and, after breaking down the trailer, we moved to the new spot without stagnant water nearby. Setup wasn’t too bad... for about the first three or four minutes - then here they came. I finished up the setup, covered with mosquitos the entire time then brushed off the best I could and quickly jumped into the trailer as fast as I could... too late, the inside was filled with mosquitos (again). We spent quite a while killing them before leaving in the car for Beaufort for the day to escape the incessant mosquitos. We had a LOVELY time in beautiful Beaufort that day - gorgeous town with beautiful scenery and wonderful restaurants and people. When we returned to our trailer we were again swarmed upon and after getting back into the camper as quickly as we could, we were again inundated. An hour later we thought we had gotten them all but all night we were swatting away the pests. The next day we left (2 days early), complaining about the mosquitos and were just told “Sorry”. No refund offered, $250.00, 18 hours of driving and over 50 mosquito bites later we were home. I understand they couldn’t control the hurricane that destroyed the campground, but they shouldn’t be charging such high rates for the dilapidated condition of their park. Oh yeah, the beautiful tide pools we had enjoyed a few years earlier were gone along with all the beachfront sites that were so popular. Stay at your own risk and hit Costco on the way there for a case of Deep Woods Off, not that it helped us! The only reason for the two stars instead of just one is because the staff were very friendly an helpful and I’m assuming the no refund policy is a NC State thing, not there’s.

For Hunting Island State Park: Horrible. Under water. Tight sites with no privacy. Exorbitantly expensive if you are a walk up/ no reservation camper. If your only desire is to be in close proximity to the beach, this will suffice, but bring your wallet.

For Hunting Island State Park: First week in April, no seeum midgets horrible (early afternoon). Campground damaged by hurricane, sites not level, no shade, potholes, poorly maintained for being so expensive. S.C. state parks do not allow any refunds with early departure.

For Hunting Island State Park: This is a really nice State Park. It’s quiet and quite enjoyable on weekdays. Weekends the crowd changes to families and weekend warriors, so a little different feel. Campsites are all a little different sized, depending on location of trees, but most of them are decent size. Roads are narrow, but one way, and some major potholes, so definitely need to take it slow. Nice, natural beach just a short stroll away.

For Hunting Island State Park: What a nice park. Good campsites bathroom and shower facilities clean and well maintained. The campground was badly damaged two years ago by a hurricane and lost all the Oceanside campsites. Staff was very friendly and helpful. This would be a 5 star campground review if the beach were returned to usability. Regardless, it’s still one of my favorite state parks in the U.S. and I will be returning again in the near future.

For Hunting Island State Park: Beautiful park, we very much enjoyed our stay. Everyone, especially the Park Ranger, helped us newbie campers out tremendously. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Paved roads, gravel sites. Bathrooms were surprisingly very clean and located within a reasonable distance from camping sites. Has showers and playgrounds for kids. Quiet time is at 10pm and everyone near us complied. No alcoholic beverages allowed is another plus for serenity. Fishing pier currently damaged from last Hurricane. Highly recommend.

For Hunting Island State Park: **Please Note**. There is a Hunting Island State Park AND a Huntington Beach State Park. I wanted reservations at Hunting Island, however, when I arrived I found out I had booked Huntington Beach. The staff was very nice and said this happens often. They found us a spot for one night. This is a beautiful state park and we are disappointed that we can't stay as long as we had planned. Just a heads up to make sure you double check your booking.
