For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: So the base is very nice. Great views. Close to everything. There’s even a dog beach! Laundry was big & good prices. Did not utilize the bathrooms. Great walking for dogs. Spots are mostly concrete & level. If it rains it’ll get muddy. They have recycling which is very nice.
With all that being said, the way the do their reservations is very strange. It’s first come first serve or it’s not? You can reserve, you can’t? You have to move to dry camping after 2 weeks or you don’t? Very confusing. Unless you’re in the ‘annex’ area, everything else is very cramped. Most areas they really pack you in there. It’s a top up if we’d go back or not.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: The campground was fine, but checking in was PAINFUL !!! It was the slowest, most inefficient we have ever encountered . The woman taking our information was rude, and slow at her job. Her supervisor wasn’t much better. It took us over an hour to get through the process. When we tried to provide feedback to them, their response was, “ every base does it differently , and we are doing you a favor for allowing you to stay here.†I hope the rest of the base functions better than this office.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: Quiet, safe, friendly. Lots of things to do in the area (Busch Gardens for one🙂) plus a great military base with some great amenities (beach, boat rentals for two🙂🙂). Sites are shaded and decent. Bath house was spotless!! Highly recommend.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: Great post and amenities. The camp sites need work. I stayed two night in dry camping area. It would help if the sites were mark rather than driving around to look for a space. My second night I was wakened up at 2330hrs by the camp host telling me I had to turn my generator off during quiet hours. I checked the rules and they only allow generators to run if the temperature is below 45 degrees. The first night it was below 45 degrees. It’s basically impossible for a all electric Class A batteries to make it through the night even with just the refrigerator running. Shame on me for not reading the rules, shame on management for not saying something at check in since he saw my coach. We decided to leave at midnight. First time I’ve dry camped and could use the generator.

For Racoons Creek Recreation Area: They take limited reservations one year out and expect lots of snowbirds. All the reserved spots were full. The rest of the spaces are first come, first served. Don’t expect to get full hook-ups. We were in partial for a couple of days and had to negotiate to get full hook- ups. We were told that the rules were such that we would be required to go to dry camp after two weeks, then partial hook-ups for 2 weeks before being allowed to go back to full hook-ups again. We elected to leave after 2 weeks. MacDill is a beautiful base with a well-stocked commissary and Exchange. The campground is a 10 minute drive from the commissary and front gate. There is no diesel fuel for sale on the base. Expect to hear reveille at 6:00 am, a siren at noon, colors at 5:00 pm and taps at 10:00 pm. Also expect to hear gunfire from the nearby range. And bring mosquito repellent.
