For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: Great views down into the valley. Clean restrooms with flush toilets. 3 loops. A and B take rv/trailers and allow generators and are reservable. C says tents only, but also allows truck campers and vans under 20’, and is FF. Many sites would be hard to level, but there are several that are great.

For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: You may not find this campground to be useable. 48 B was way to steep to be able to level our 20’ van. We drove out and went to the FHU James Robb SP campground in Fruita. The drive to Saddlehorn campground is amazing; the campground is not.

For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: Free WiFi at the visitor center! I camped in both Loop C and Loop A. Both are first-come-first-served, and I got one of the last sites when I pulled in around noon (June 5). Great views of the Book Cliffs from many sites. Drinking water easily available, but no RV tank filling. Charcoal fires only in the grates, picnic tables, and Utah junipers plentiful, which provide privacy. No shade, and most sites I tried were not level. Great short hikes for the elderly (me). Did I mention the views? Plus Grand Junction is nearby for filling prescriptions, etc.

For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: Great scenery. 2 towns nearby. Good elbow room on the spots. I wish it had fire pits and showers. Bathrooms are very clean.

For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: We were looking for a place to stay that would be convenient to the hiking trails within the Colorado National Monument. We’re self-contained and don’t use the facilities. We stayed for 5 days, including a weekend, in early October in our 25 foot MH.
This CG is nicely situated near the western edge of The Monument and near the Visitor Center. Note there are tunnels on the road to the CG – side heights are 10’6â€, center heights are 16’ and lanes are 20’ wide. There are 3 loops within a pinyon pine/juniper forest. We stayed in the A loop. The C loop is the original campground with smaller sites (20 foot max) in a denser forest affording greater privacy. Loops A and B include a mix of back-in sites and pull overs. In most yet not all cases, the pull overs are spaced to allow for some privacy despite being parked on the side of the loop road. Some sites have views of the Grand Valley below the rim. The sites vary in size from longer and skinny to short and wide. Some are better for tents while others are better for RVs. All sites were gravel and most need some leveling. There are no hookups. Water is available for jugs near the restrooms and not available to fill an RV. There’s no dump station at the CG. There’s a free dump station with rinse and potable water at the Colorado Welcome Center at the intersection of I-70 and SR340. (Note: GPS may take you to the nearby Colorado State Park Welcome Center which is not free.) There’s no wifi. We had good ATT and Verizon coverage. We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon without reservations and were able to get a walk-in site. All sites in loop B and some of A can be reserved with the rest available for walk-ins. (Don’t know about loop C.)
The Monument Visitor Center is a short walk from the campground and the people there are quite helpful. The 23-mile Rim Rock Drive includes 19 overlooks with views into the canyons. It can be combined with SR340 for a 30-mile circuit. There are many short or longer hiking trails to choose from including those that descend into the canyons or climb ridges. All services are available in Fruita or Grand Junction.

Wandering Sandals
For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: Stayed at Saddlehorn Campground for 2 nights at $20/night. While it’s primitive; but 3 drinking water spigots in each loop, and generator is allowed between 8am - 8pm made our stay more comfortable. We stayed in hilly loop B (generators are allowed in A & B, and not in C). As others have noted, bathroom is clean, sites are not leveled, 3 tunnels with rounded ceiling 10’6†height on the sides and 16’ height at center according to sign) Some sites are pull-throughs and most are back-ins. Some sites have picnic tables on the right side of the trailer, the rest are on the wrong side. No electric hookups or showers anywhere in the campground. WiFi? You’re joking, right? At least there is 2 bars LTE. OTA TV gave us 15 digital channels to keep up with local news & weather. Night view of city of Fruita and Colorado River below were spectacular from site B37. Lots of big horn sheep resting and eating by the road sides. We will stay again if come back this way.

For Saddlehorn Campground - Colorado National Monument: Ditto the previous review. The sites are not very level, so be aware if you use a leveling system as we do in our class C. Walk to the edge of the canyons for some spectacular views. Highly recommend this National Monument. Would stay there again when in the area.
