For Sand Mountain Recreation Area: Great for off-road enthusiasts but like the Imperial sand dunes in California there is a 40 or $50 weekly permit that you have to buy to be inside the gate. The penalty if you don't have one is $125. A little pricey for a one-night stay. Dozens of people camped out here on March 21. Rather surprising given it is so remote.

For Sand Mountain Recreation Area: Unless you are a dirt biker or ATVer, you will not like this campground! It is a constant buzz/growl of motors all day long in a dusty bowl in a giant sand box. The quiet hours are midnight to 6 am and they are observed loosely. If you are an ATVer, it would be heaven with lots of sand to play in.
