For Sam Owen Campground: This campground gets a big plus for the lakeside setting, although the adjacent day use area (also a USFS fee area) actually has the nicest swimming beach and shaded picnic area. The campground fee is a bit high, considering the campground and facilities overall (including in the day use area) are only casually managed and maintained by the contracted private operator. Despite the relatively high price, it all looks more like an old and rustic campground. For example the restrooms in the day use area look like the fixtures date from about 1940. This USFS site is not as modern or improved as a typical Idaho state park, just for another example. If you’re looking for something “nice†and “modern†try the private resort and rv park immediately to the east (for 3x the price).
