For Buttermilk Campground: Amazing campground. Stay in the group area for a rally then moved over to the B loop. Huge sites we stayed in site 47 with our 45 ft toy hauler. Several other big rigs with us had nice spots as well. no problems getting in and out of the sites. Clean bathrooms water filling stations centrally located to all campers. Dump station 7 miles from main road great camp hosts. Some atv noise but they are not allowed in the camp ground so that’s a good thing. We would stay here again about 45 min from west Yellowstone!!

For Buttermilk Campground: Buttermilk was our home base for one week in July 2018. Easy access to the reservoir, boat launch is just out of camp. ATVs not allowed in campground itself however, there is a parking lot for ATVs as you enter/leave Buttermilk with access to what seems like endless riding trails and roads. Buttermilk is well kept with friendly hosts and potable water. Buttermilk restrooms are very clean, you won’t even realize there are not flushing toilets until you get in the stall.
Buttermilk is close to Henry’s Fork and we spent an afternoon on a nice lazy river float and easy take out at Mack’s Inn, can get crowded but be patient and everyone gets along just fine.
Buttermilk is an easy drive to West Yellowstone and YNP, we spent multiple days exploring the park. Buttermilk is a great location if you want spend the nights away from it all after spending the day in the crowded park. Tip, if you want to experience a less crowded YNP head in bright and early (watch for moose on road out of park) and if you get to grand prismatic and old faithful early in the morning, you might actually get a chance to park in the parking lot and enjoy the sights before they are over run with tour busses and other travelers crowding the boardwalks like a herd of cattle. Buttermilk has amazing views of the night sky with no light pollution, great place to kick back and star gaze.
We enjoyed Buttermilk so much we booked another trip with multiple family’s (30 people) for a week stay in Buttermilk’s very nice and reasonably priced group site. The group site is a smaller private loop next to the boat launch, it has 5 single back in sites and 4 double sites in addition to a nice sized gravel parking area and a large gathering area containing bbqs, fire pit, and picnic tables.
