For Indian Cove - Joshua Tree National Park: First, the positives — the campground is an easy, short drive off CA-62. It’s ~1K ft lower elevation than the popular Jumbo Rocks and thus about 5 deg F warmer, a fact we appreciated during a February cold snap. The amazing rock formations surround most campsites making for a unique experience. Now the negatives — there is no controlled access into this portion of the park. We stopped at the info building at the gate on the way in expecting a formal check-in process but the ranger just said “okay, go on up.†No vehicle tag, no campsite tag, no fee. As a result, there’s no apparent enforcement of the rules regarding max number of vehicles, day use areas and parking, etc. Good luck if someone has already occupied your reserved spot, you’d be forced to drive all the way out to the entrance to make your case. The unconstrained access results in day use rock climbers overflowing into the campground and the majority of these folks have no clue when it comes to campsite etiquette. One day we had at least a dozen people walk right through our site; several had to duck to avoid bumping their head on our slide out. The designated day use climbing areas just don’t have enough rock face to accommodate the flood of climber enjoying their free access. The main road surface quality in the campground is quite poor compared to Jumbo Rocks. The sites themselves have a bit more room but keep in mind that only a couple dozen sites were adequate in size for our 20 ft travel trailer. If you rule out the sites along the main road and adjacent to the pit toilets, you’re down to only a handful. If we come back to JT it will not be to this campground.

For Indian Cove - Joshua Tree National Park: Such a beautiful gem! We loved staying at Indian cove! My kids had endless play on the rocks, and the nighttime views were unreal. There’s no hookups, but garbage and bathroom facilities. We have a 38’ bus, we found a place to park, but it wouldn’t have worked if we didn’t have such high clearance on our backend, there were two other spots a 40 footer could probably squeeze, but most of the spots would barely fit 30’. If anything so park here and explore for a few hours. If you see an open spot that you will fit, grab it!
