Shadow Cruising

For Stovepipe Wells RV Park: We stayed at Stovepipe Wells RV Park and Campground in pull-thru, FHU site 4. The hookups were well maintained, the space between spots was good and the dark sky star watching was excellent. It’s a desert campground with 14 FHU sites and the views are beautiful. The FHU spots are the closest to the hotel across the street, so we were able to get the free WiFi from the hotel on our devices. AT&T Cellular worked well at the campground. The hotel also gives all campers access to the pool (open until midnight), has a restaurant, saloon and a General Store with absolutely no RV or camping supplies. So pack in all your essentials. The campground bathrooms are clean with flushing toilets and you can purchase a shower card from the registration desk at the hotel for showers. The location is perfect. While not as fancy or as expensive as Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells is more centrally located to some of the more interesting hikes, like the Ubehebe crater, Darwin Falls, the Kilns, Mosaic Canyon, Mesquite Sand Dunes and for a 4x4 adventure, Racetrack. Stovepipe Wells has good food and is more reasonably priced at the restaurant and saloon than at Furnace Creek. The saloon and restaurant have the same menu items every day and night. The restaurant has a good buffet breakfast for $10 per person. Regular gasoline is the only fuel sold at the gas station at Stovepipe Wells. It is usually a dollar or two cheaper than Furnace Creek. Stovepipe Wells DOES NOT sell diesel. Diesel is only available at Panamint or at Furnace Creek. The current price for diesel at Furnace Creek is $7.20/gal. At Panamint, diesel is currently $5.49/gal. There’s a 6 mile 9% grade and and a 17 mile 6% grade on Hwy 190 on the way into/out of Death Valley between Panamint and Stovepipe Wells. Make sure your skills, transmission and brakes are up to the task before going. I would recommend Stovepipe wells for FHU or dry camping.

Nomadic Nobles

For Stovepipe Wells RV Park: The stay was fine. An almost level parking area with full hookups. Gas and store right there. Use of pool and showers included with the nightly fee. Not many electric sites in the park, maybe 30 or so. We were glad/ lucky to nab one as a walk in. All in all, a great stay until after we left, they charged my credit card an additional 2 nights. No I have to go through the trouble of disputing the charges with my bank. I would stay again but pay with cash.
