With a roaring fireplace and the haunting notes of the grand point, One if By Land, Two if By Sea is an idea place for a dinner date and an intimate table for two.
2) Spice Market
This meatpacking-district trendy neo-standby has quickly worked its magic on the restaurant scene to head to the top of many New Yorkers’ dining lists. Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten opened this place in 2004, and even today it’s the hottest spot in town. With an impressive decor and a fusion menu inspired by street-food of Southeast Asia, Spice Market is the place to be for a brunch or a night on the town.
3) Nobu
This iconic, extravagant, world-class sushi joint is known for having some of the best, mouth-watering, mouth-melting food in the world. The ambiance, too, with its minimalist elegance, is some of the finest around. But book ahead – this place requires reservations weeks or months in advance.
4) Aureole
This extravagant New American restaurant located in a brownstone on New York’s elegant Upper East Side has a reputation for excellence. From the John Dory fish to the pear tart to the beef carpaccio here, the food at Aureole is uniformly excellent, and well worth the often exorbitant prices. The service is excellent as well, with attentive waiters eager to make your experience as luxurious and decadent as possible – if you’re not enjoying your meal enough, they might provide you with a free dessert or two to soften you up.
5) The River Cafe
The only restaurant on this list not in Manhattan, this Brooklyn Heights standby can nevertheless match wits (and menus) with any Manhattan restaurant in a heartbeat. With extraordinary food matched only by the sumptuous river views of the East River, The River Cafe is another special-occassion eatery with some of the finest atmosphere in any borough.
